A good book, predictably more about her children with autism than about dogs. And I kinda wanted a dog book lol. But it has reminded me of why I want a second dog!! LIKE RIGHT NOW.

I wanted to read a book about how dogs can have a therapeutic role in treating autism. But this book read like someone's annual Christmas newsletter. It was dry and personal and not very informative.

What a touching read! As the subtitle says, Dale is an autistic child who makes leaps and bounds in his development after his parents get him a golden retriever pupppy named Henry. Their bond - like so many between dog and kid - is strong and enduring.
Henry provides Dale with a safe way to learn eye contact, what facial expressions mean, and the concept of personal space. I was also kind of shocked at how extreme Dale's autism was; I admittedly haven't been around very many autistic people (at least that I knew about). Nuala (Dale's mom) had such a hard road with Dale and his struggles and it was hard to read at times.
Overall, a good read that you may need a few kleenex for. But the relationship between Henry and Dale and his parents' efforts to get through to Dale are worth it.

Highly emotional and heartwarming story. Worth a read as it shows the difficulties that so many people endure and live through...and how comfort and peace can be found in the most unexpected ways. Moving story that will stay with me long after.

"A Friend Like Henry" is the memoir of a family. Henry is a dog who comes into their lives and makes an incredibly difference for all of them.
When Dale was diagnosed with autism, his mother didn't seem to have a lot of support in the beginning. She did great work with using the tools she had to teach him and to never give up. This book highlights the importance of early intervention and presumed competence. Dale's family has to fight for all the services they receive, and they have to fight to allow Dale to attend mainstream classes. Unfortunately, that is all too common.
My favorite quote: "Just because someone wipes your a**, it doesn't mean you need to kiss theirs."
Potential trigger warning: This book does deal with a miscarriage.
Star rating: 4 out of 5. This may have been a five if I had read it in a different format. Th

Thought it was ok but nothing more. As an autistic person myself it didn't have any/much misinformation but other than a few very good points most of the book was definitely from a non-autistic world for a non-autistic reader. 2/5 stars.

I really liked this book. I feel like I always learn a lot when I read a book by a parent with an autistic child. As an animal lover, I loved the way Henry impacted all of their lives.

Interesting look at autism through a parent's eyes. How difficult the situation, but amazing human resilience.
