excommunikate's review against another edition

I like this author and am a fan of the podcast Noble Blood so I thought this would be perfect. The intro was great and I appreciate the content warnings. Unfortunately, the sections on individual women were just too graphic for me. Too much description and not enough interpretation to make it worthwhile. I’ll pick up some of her other titles.

This was a brief overview of women in history who have killed. Each entry is only 3-5 pages so it is a very brief coverage of their crimes and what lead up to it. A lot of the book is hearsay and popular legends, and while Wright prefaces those instances with "it's said" or "people believe" or "rumor has it" this book isn't nearly as deep or thoroughly researched as it could be (Many of Wright's subjects are also covered by the podcast Noble Blood which goes far deeper in depth). But it definitely serves as a light beach read for true crime stans.

While a quick, entertaining read, She Kills Me is not as good as the author’s book on plagues, Get Well Soon. Wright certainly did her research and writes about some fascinating women, but each section is so short that overall I was left wanting more. Likewise, I appreciate Wright’s wit and sense of humor but it often felt forced here because the pieces are so succinct that there isn’t much to build a joke on.

I did really appreciate that Wright put content warnings in front of every single piece, so the reader knows what they’re getting into.

Not mad I read this, but I’d recommend Get Well Soon over this if you’re looking to enjoy interesting history and Wright at her best.
