Of course, the illustrations are wonderful.
The lore in this series is much more interesting than I thought it would be. Also, the way this book is written is practically begging to be read aloud. I almost wish I had a child just so I could read them this story before bedtime. Put in this setting, the book would be the best and more magical than if they read this by themselves.
I can't wait to read the others.

Excellent book. Very well written with superb illustrations. Highly recommended read for families. The boys loved it and they're only 3 and 5.

EDIT// I can't believe how good these books are. No pop culture representations of Santa Claus anymore, only this one, forever, thanks.
(P.S. When the audiobook narrator says "Fearlings" it sounds to me like "feelings" every time, which does lead to some hilarious sentiments like "Nicholas was caught by a feeling." Same...)

This was really adorable. While yes, it is a children's book, Joyce definitely didn't use that as an excuse to dumb it down; the language is descriptively gorgeous without being too complicated, and he uses great words you'd never expect to see in a kid's book. (Potentate? Even I had to look that one up.) The story is pretty well-constructed, too, and you have to love the characters. Also? The illustrations are fantastic. What marvelous designs. <3

Very different take on the Santa Claus story. I loved the characters and the drawings added to the enchantment that the story places over the reader. Truly a great story and concept... however the beginning was very dark for a children's story at times, still it ended happily.

Sweeping, beautiful, epic and magical! I really enjoyed this book, it's characters and it's manner of story-telling a lot! I did think it might be a little too dark, or intense in some parts for it's intended audience, but it did not hinder my enjoyment of the whole. I've already started the second in the series!
