3.4/5 - I read this book as a sort of meditation on anger. Oh, I was trying to find Seneca’s “on anger“ but stumbled upon this little ditty instead. Oh, it reminded me of some basic stoic takeaways that I probably needed to think about. Acted as a nice almost guided meditation/introspection about anger, and the root of that emotion and the control that it has in your life. Bonus points for it being a little less dry than Seneca‘s original text.

Here we have Seneca back to his same old shenanigans. I did like that this book was significantly less preachy than the book on death. I liked the anecdotes he used to illustrate his points and I think that he makes a compelling argument. It may be coloring my review that I already agree with much of what he said about temperance and self regulation before starting the book. Overall I enjoyed this and think it a marked improvement on other writings of his which I have read. I think the editor/modern author also really nailed the landing with his selections and points this go around.

There are certainly better Seneca books

Seneca writes how the worst emotion is anger. Anything you do can be done better if you are not angry. He says there is no way being angry can help you overcome anything. He gave off reasons why someone might think being angry would be better but then proves a reason why it doesn't help to be angry.

I would highly suggest this book, especially if you think anger gets the better of you more than you would like, like it does to me.

While it's good and interesting to see the "raw" writing it could have done with some prefacing
