This series is ridiculous, but that's kinda the point and part of the fun. I wish Magnus didn't take such a deviation from Magnus in Whit, but I did enjoy Sem. The "challenge" that started everything was a bit over the top for me personally, but I think the whole series was made to be ridiculous but fun and lovable. I didn't enjoy it as much as Whit, but it was still a fun read. Please check the content warnings for the book before reading.

I absolutely love Sem and Maggie. I love how much their weird perfectly complimented each other. I also really appreciated how much they truly cared about each other, listened to each other, and that they really fought for each other.
I went into it thinking Sem was going to be the more outlandish one (which he kindof was?) but the way he cares so deeply about everything was so sweet. I also adored how Maggie went after it and refused to give his guy up, but in the most unexpected way possible

In the preface, the author says “When reading this, I hope you can suspend reality just a little and roll with it” and I definitely think having that understanding going in made this somehow lighthearted stalker romance hit just right and be fun. The story makes perfect internal sense and basically no real world sense and it’s great.

I clear my throat and wonder if I should fib a little but then decide against it. Because really, who cares how it started. What matters is the ending, right?
“Well, Sem broke into my house and dared me to fuck him.”

My first instinct is to say this book was "cute" but I think that's kind of underselling it. Yet, I don't know how else to describe it. I enjoyed Sem even more than Whit, probably because the MCs feel more fleshed-out and there weren't as many underdeveloped aspects. I simply loved Sem and Maggie together. Their dynamic just has the perfect blend of silliness, sexiness, and sincerity. Despite their differences and the unconventional way they got together, I believed in their compatibility and love for each other.

Having read 2 of Rose's books now, I can see why she's compared to Alessandra Hazard. There are quite a few similarities between the Unexpected series and Hazard's Straight Guys series. Both are trope-heavy with possessive/obsessive characters and over-the-top stories and situations that require some suspension of disbelief. While I haven't devoured Rose's books like I did Hazard's, they're still pretty addicting.
