This is really not Cheris' best work. The "I love yous" don't seem earned because from what it sounds like they had a one night stand a year ago, he had her arrested, she was mad at it, but he's in love with her?
SpoilerIt's a confusing timeline. And then their interactions for most of the book were about her being mad at him and hating him for doing his job. Overall a very frustrating couple and the "villain" of the book wasn't particularly scary or compelling. The kidnapping plot at the end was random and unnecessary. The agent that was the "mole" was revealed too soon and then killed off too fast.
Honestly, if this had been the first book that I read by this author, I probably wouldn't have finished it.

This was a pretty good book. I enjoyed it and the roller coaster relationship between Zoe and Carver. I might read other books by this author in the future.

Most romances don't get a 5 star read from me because they're usually predictable, but this one was one of those amazing romantic suspense stories that kept me on the edge of my seat and I had to keep reading, because every time I thought it was going to be the same old same old, there was a twist I wasn't expecting. Amazing job.

I really wanted to love this book...but it just didn't work for me. To start off with something positive: I liked the character of Zoe! She's fierce and awesome and any female PI who has made it her life's work to bring down bad guys is okay with me. My problem was with Carver. The romance part of this story is a 2nd chance at love--2 years ago, Zoe hooked up with Carver, not realizing he was undercover and using her to close a case. My issue is that the **ENTIRE PLOT** of this book is him lying to her again. It's to protect her from a killer who's after her, but that doesn't change the fact that he's doing to her again the same thing that so infuriated her the first time they were together. So the thing that broke them up the first time is the same problem this time, so why would I believe the results would be different?

There's quite a bit going on plot-wise, and it honestly wasn't as cleanly fashioned as I needed it to be. There's quite a bit of head-hopping, and too much of the plot points/timeline didn't make sense to me. They dated 2 years ago, but the fall-out from that case is still causing all this trouble? Why now? However, I don't read tons of romantic suspense...maybe it was me? I definitely had some lingering questions about pretty much everything. It was not a satisfying mystery. However, the real deal-breaker was the "lying to save her"--a plot I think is is patriarchal and annoying.

I received an ARC from NetGalley.
