Almost perfect in every way. This is why I read books. Wish it did not have to end. Enthralled till the very last word. Colleen McCullough has no equal.

Again a lovely history book that makes me want to do more research to see how much of it was actually true. Sometimes a bit too many names and details in storylines (or more the beginning of storylines) that seem not necessary for me.

Realllly well done Roman history. This is a civics class rolled up in an historical thriller and how history should be taught. Exciting and surprising all the way through. Highly recommended and a solid 5 stars!

In this, the second of the Masters of Rome series, we learn more about the remarkable Sulla. His ability to casually murder those who will thereby aid his rise to power, has already been established in the first book. His pursuit of the Grass Crown - recognition by a Legion of the brilliance of its commander - provides the theme for this tale of a ruthless but strangely attractive man. Again it is McCullough's understanding of Rome of this time and the details she provides that add to rather than detract from the story, that contribute to making this a first rate read.

Excellent scholarship but as historical fiction it's quite weighed down by historical fact and the dialogue is mostly certain Britishisms. Even so it's interesting and worth reading. The focus is on the Roman political class of society. These people lived like all too fleshly Olympian Gods. They played deadly games for power, honor and money while everyone else needed to keep their heads down at best or were helpless pawns at worst.
