Another absorbing mystery, the protagonist was a lot more badass in this one. More players are being introduced and the world is getting more filled out.

Niiice! The series is coming together into a nice rhythm that makes it a thoroughly enjoyable read for the urban fantasy fan that I am.

I went straight from "Dire Straits" to this, the 2nd volume in the series. Likeable, easy to read.... it was perfect while I was on a deadline to finish knitting my handspun cardigan. It didn't take a lot of thought, but was good background for my frantic knitting.

Themes: vampires, magic

I may not agree always with Bo Blackman’s choices, but she’s definitely an entertaining read. Looking for book 3 now.

I did enjoy this book but not as much as the previous book. Bo really annoyed me in places, Bo spent a lot of the time feeling sorry for herself and hating that she was a vampire- complaining about how there are no benefits to being a vampire but the alternative for her is being dead (because she got so injured at the end of the last book), it's also not really explained why she hates being a vampire so much. She also seemed so determined to run off and not get anyone else's help and kept just running into trouble that she had to be rescued from.

It was also quite confusing in places, all the different factions have different agendas and secrets and if was kind of overcomplicated particularly for such an early book in a series. The author did flesh out the magic of the world that Bo lives in more and helped explain some of the magic that goes on.

The other problem I had was that whilst the previous book in the series reminded me a bit of the chicagoland vampire series this one was even more similar with the different houses and the vampire/human public relations and it didn't feel like a particularly original story. I probably will read the next book in the series but I hope that it's more like Dire Straits than New Order.

I was a bit hesitant about the fourth star, but truth is it kept my attention and built enough world and opened enough threads that I continue being invested. I still am not all that warm with Bo. On one hand she is refreshingly normal, makes lots of mistakes and tries to be a better person. On the other hand her issues do annoy me, I wish she‘d get over them fast. Also I find it strange that everybody treats her as this amazing person, when she clearly is not (and she agrees with me). Her communication skills are not great, for someone who wants to be a liaison...
