UGHHHH. The narrator was an exhausting, toxic narcissist so her relationships and therefore entire plot based on relationships made zero sense, the world building was boosh and also made zero sense, and DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THAT ENDING COME ON NOW.

I liked the story and it brought out a lot of emotion, which I don't always find in books. I was tired of the mysterious missing pieces of the story about halfway through and wanted to know without having to wait for the flashbacks.

This is a unique little book. It took me awhile to figure out what to make of it. Most importantly, I looked forward to reading it, didn't want to put it down when I was, and have been thinking about it since finishing.

The triumph of the book is the odd narrator, Franny. In addition to keeping her distance from others, she is difficult, fairly unlikeable, mean at times, unreliable, and a struggle to understand. And yet - I found myself feeling close to her even as I was frustrated with her. The final section of the book got a little heavy handed and parts seemed unbelievable - but by then I was fully rooting for Franny and her dark story.

Cli-fi x ocean adventure x psychological thriller.
Hard to put down (skim-read in a night, but won't re-read at this stage)
Set in a dystopian near future where mass extinction of familiar flora and fauna has created much social and political tension.
