I love Miss Spark's work, and I know I read them out of order (this one being the first book in the series), but I really did not like Shanna's rationale on things.
She definitely only gave him one chance on stuff before going full-blown crazy. And at one point she ran away to the bad guys only to realize that the person who could have helped was in the same facility that she was in in the first place. What was the point in that?
I really like Roman though. He is a sweet boy. I also want to mention that the bad guy is like affably evil?

The story probably won't be terrible if you like a little "will they won't they" but there are zero surprises. There's so little tension given the context of vampire rivalry and the human-vampire relationship. The main characters' respective guilt is exhausting rather than touching because it's the thing they keep going back to; it's like their lives have no other meaning or even activity to distract them from the guilt. Some of the vampire details, like having blood "fusion cuisine," veer into cozy territory (because they're represented a little too ridiculously for fantasy), but there's too much fainting-couch-level drama for a cozy in my opinion.

It's not bad, but if you find it not to your liking in the first 10% you can safely abandon it for something else.

Whilst an interesting concept for modern vampires - I think you really can tell that it was written in the early 2000s

And I think the internal misogyny of the FL and most of the characters finally got to me.
