Compared to The Prize and The Quest - which are magisterial, cogent, informative and evergreen - this was pretty disappointing. Reads more like a jarringly disjointed collection of news articles. Not much additional information for anyone who is a mere casual reader of mainstream financial news and/or developments in the energy markets.

While I did not find this work as compelling as Yergin's "The Prize" it was a worthwhile read. Perhaps because I have worked in the energy industry during the decades that this book covers, many of the events and trends were already familiar. But Yergin's broad brush compilation is interesting and up-to-date. He presents a balanced view of all this, including the pandemic and the climate change debate.

Yergin is an expert in oil and geopolitics. When he is explaining how the current system developed and speculates on near-future tensions, the book is detailed and engrossingly informative. When he starts talking about alternative energy, however, the rigour isn’t there, and so there’s less sense of what the coming conflicts and challenges might be.

Another outstanding analysis from Yergin.
Like 'The Quest' years ago, Daniel Yergin sees the world through the prism of energy.
In 'The New Map', he outlines the maps of the two major superpowers.
Also included are Russia and the Middle East, the other energy providers.
Always insightful and instructive, this book is a must read for anyone who seeks to understand world events today and tomorrow.
