Der Beginn einer meiner absoluten Lieblingsgeschichten und jetzt musste ich endlich auch die fehlenden Bände nachholen. Der erste Arc ist eine abgeschlossene Geschichte, die die wichtigsten Figuren einführt und das Grundkonzept der Geschichte erklärt. Vor allem wenn man die weitere Geschichte kennt ist es in Sachen Forshadowing und kleinen Details der Hammer.

 - Subarus Charakter ist auf den ersten Blick flach, aber es gibt so viele Details
 - Return by Death strukturiert die Handlung durch verschiedene Loops
 - Gutes Maß aus Action und Mysterie

 - Für alle Charaktere wird nur Grundwerk gelegt und bei keinem in die Tiefe gegangen
 - Plot bleibt noch recht simpel

Only the beginning 

It’s been a while since I’ve gone through the first volume. However, I did take notes on what I felt when I first went about it. 

Even early into the novel you can feel the charm coming off from the story. 

It has an interesting plot hook, however the real impact comes from the interactions between the characters. Subaru is a very interesting isekai protagonist, he’s a complete chuuni, bit of an eccentric and unapologetically cringe which, if this were handled by another author it would be hard to watch. And it is! But it’s so captivating you just can’t look away. 

I love the way Tappei describes the world, especially when we get our first look at the other worldly beauty that is Emilia. And then there’s the magic, the otherworldly people, fantasy creatures. It all just sucks you in. 

It’s fun escapism. 

However. It’s missing something. 

I’ve read other isekai with stronger starts, and those left a much more lasting impression on my mind. Perhaps it’s too early to judge. 

It’s only the beginning after all.

Coming in from the anime, it's amazing how often Subaru compliments Reinhard in his narration. We are not beating the bi allegations in this one, folks.

My first light-novel and I loved it! It was fun, though incomplete. I would give it 5 stars but due to incompleteness, I can't. It was not even 1\10 of the whole story, however, it was fun most of the times.

Plot- 4/5 Fantasy, magical worlds are overused, still I love reading this kind of stories. The story wasn't deep, as it is only the first volume, but constant adventure was enjoyable. Half-elves, spirits, magic and swordsmen... it was delicious!

Characters-5/5 loved all the characters. Main character Subaru was funny and curious character, not to mention, brave as hell, with a hero complex. But saving people isn't that easy, even if you have unusual power. Time-travelling by death is a cool concept and he used it pretty well, I guess? He has so much to learn, for sure. Half-elf Emilia was so cute and clever, I loved her. Need more Emilia-Subaru moments! Puck was hilarious and cute too. Other characters such as Felt , Reinhard and old man Rom were quite good. And I think I need more of Reinhard, he is such an interesting swordsman!

Enjoyment-5/5 Loved every moment of it!
Writing style-3/5 I think there were some problems with translation and also some descriptions were long and unnecessary. Still it was easy to read.

Overall-4/5 stars

This is the first light novel I’ve been able to finish. I fell in love with the anime Re:Zero and watched it all. Since there’s not more out I decided to read these from start to finish. This book and the anime are remarkably similar though there’s some stuff the anime added and some stuff missing.

I fell like I have a better understanding of some characters like Reinhard and “Satella”.

Overall enjoyed it. The translation can be a little clunky sometimes but that’s to be expected.

This was my first step into modern light novels. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. I expected this to be as bad as most American young adult novels but there was a really amazing story here.
