A rollicking good adventure story that gets to the point quickly and holds the tension until the very last sentence. Garner really showing his mastery of the craft of writing here, despite the story being only slightly lesser than his debut.

It got so much better as it went on, but just as I actually got fully attached, it suddenly ended?? Sequel?? Please?? Thank you??

just IMAGINE having the audacity to write and publish a children’s book that ends like this

The problem may be that this isn't the kind of book I thought it was. The ending was abrupt and unsatisfying in a way that forced me to re-evaluate everything up till then. It feels like an E. Nesbit/C.S. Lewis children's adventure story until the last two pages, when it suddenly becomes a grown-up critique of that sort of story. It may be profound literature, but it doesn't work as a story.

I don't know whey I have never read this before, having read all of Alan Garner's others and having loved most of them. This is a very enjoyable book. Not as dark as some. I'll try and get my own kids to read it but it may be a little old fashioned for some of today's younger audiences.

The beginning is a nice paced adventurous book, then nothing really happens but there was the potential for so much more woth some interesting concepts considering when it was published. The ending is then rushed. Ultimately, a good foundation with a missed delivery

Although the story was still five star and as good as I remembered from childhood read the narration of this audiobook was awful.  The narrator used silly voices for the kids that seemed very condescending, and lost all of the books magic.  Don't recommend the audio, read the original instead.  Even if the setting is very outdated, the story is still great and fires the imagination.

Thoroughly unimpressed. The book started really strongly, then got lost, and ended all in a rush without a satisfactory conclusion
