This was short but not necessarily sweet.
Rafe, the self-made American, has been told he must Mary Lady Natalie from the peerage if he is to inherit from his father. However, on first meeting her Lady's Companion, Hannah, he is instantly tugging her under stairways and forcing her to accept his kisses, despite her own horror.
Then, despite his continued advances on Hannah, we learn that he is still courting Lady Natalie, going so far as to kiss her too, despite only having interest in Hannah. And what should be unforgivable is merely unlikeable, because we can see his struggles in wanting to inherit, but falling in love with someone else. However, I do wish he got more reprimands, and actually had to grovel; instead he gets off scot-free whilst poor Hannah nurses a broken heart.
Despite all of this, I still found this an enjoyable read, and I did enjoy his letter. LK knew how to bring a tortured hero back into good graces.
What did, however, bring this up rating was seeing the other wallflowers and their relationships. I'm not surprised Evie and Sebastian got their own chapter, with him being as swoony as ever.

The main characters are quite forgettable, the plot doesn’t make much sense, it’s incredibly rushed and there are rather off putting scenes of the main male character forcing himself upon the main female character .
