Yoshinaga weaves core themes of sexism, inter-generational trauma, and mother-daughter relationships expertly together to form this visually stunning and impactful volume. I particularly loved how, despite the stories being focused on different characters, the presence of the main few is never completely erased. Instead, the stories come across as riveting tangents the mangaka takes you on, each with their own purposes as human relationships and love remain strong centrepieces.
I haven’t read Ooku, Yoshinaga’s most famous work, but the delicate and elegant storytelling and art style witnessed in All My Darling Daughters makes me very excited to hop into that series when the opportunity arises.

5 short stories of family and friends of Yukiko. The first is Yukiko's mother who marries a younger man from a host club, second is a adjunct professor friend and a student, third is a cousin looking for an arranged marriage (told in 2 parts), fourth is a classmate who decides to become a housewife, and finally is her grandmother and her mother who have affected her. It's all complicated and messy, like real life.

All my darling daughters is a story of daughters. They were portrayed as how ordinary people see them exclusively as women and daughters. They were portrayed as flawed and raw and natural rather than ideal and that's why this manga is beautiful.

Dibaca untuk kelas "Japanese Society through Manga and Movies" tahun lalu. Komik ini untuk dewasa dan berkisah tentang perempuan-perempuan Jepang berbeda generasi. Cerita utama berkisar di nenek, ibu, dan putrinya. Cerita tambahan datang dari teman dari pacar sang ibu. Namun kesemuanya sama, berkisah tentang bagaimana tokoh-tokoh di dalamnya berusaha menempatkan diri dalam kehidupan, bagaimana menghadapi hubungan dengan keluarga, teman, kekasih, dan juga masyarakat secara luas. Ceritanya mengalir, enak dibaca, selain itu artworknya pun bagus :)

A nice, lovely collection of short stories by a manga-ka who is pretty much an expert at these kinds of stories. Very poignant and beautifully rendered on the page.
