Wow, an author who I understand to have been a powerful woman writes a book about a woman who literally dies for a jerk and another who marries him.

Honestly corinne needs to lose the dead weight (oswald). A good third of the book could also double as a guide book for Italy :/

oswald deserves a medal for being the stupidest man i have had the pleasure of encountering in fiction. i love him despite myself. corinne, my love, you deserved better than him - but also, you deserved to have him love you. i just really liked this book. so silly and profound.

A great story from start to finish. A perfect sketch of the careful situation of a 'powerful' woman who lives under the dictates of class and the behaviors of those who dare not alter the rules. Beautifully sad, evocative of the richness of life, and the struggle for love in death.
