This took me way too long to get into. Sadly, by the time I did, I was disappointed in the ending. Just a few more chapters to wrap it up would have been much more pleasurable to read.

I enjoyed it but it's the kind of book that leaves you to your own interpretation. I'd rather end a book with answers but it was an interesting read.

This is a book I need to read every year. It’s very slow; but I like slow books. They make me think. You feel just like Jonas - the main character - while reading this book. You get to be in his head. It’s beautiful, and reminds you the beauty of life. I like that this utopian society actually works - it IS perfect. But perfect isn’t always beautiful or satisfying. As a semi religious person, I also felt connected to the Christian undertones of this story. I hated the ending (I don’t like ambiguous endings).

what a work of art. i would like to give a complete review and a long opinion but i feel so much that i don't know where to start, it's a really amazing book.
it reminds us of a very important fact, there is no true happiness without sadness, there is no love, without hate, without pain, feelings, and emotions, good and bad, are what make us human.
it warns us about absolute control, about sacrificing individuality, humanity and the right to choose for the sake of comfort, some of the rules of the community may make sense, but they are all based on the same principle, the death of the human spirit.
it really is an amazing book and Jonas is such a good character, my new protégé. god i really wish i could write more thoughts here but i have run out of words, the book speaks for itself, everyone should read it.

The perfect book to get you out of a reading slump. Super fast paced and engaging, and just overall a great story. I think this is one of those books that everyone should have to read at least once

How did I get this far in life without reading this book? Deceptively simple language and structure for a complex and difficult idea.

This book is just great. This is my second time reading it! I had read it a few years ago and the movie is coming out next month, so I thought I might need to refresh my memory (especially on the ending). I had forgotten how well-written it was as a whole, and how meaningless the life was in the book. No color, no music. Geez. I think Lowry did an excellent job creating this terrible world and also creating characters like Jonas and The Giver. I really love this book and the movie looks like it will do it justice (hopefully)! I have not read any of the other books in the series (I think there are four total), so I will be reading those for the first time soon! Can't wait!

I've yet to find a book as easy and awesome to teach my students than this one. I love reading it with them every year.
