I was charmed by this story of 7 toys left outside one summer night. Blue Rabbit demands a story and WonderDoll began Once upon a time there were seven toys left out in the garden." A spaceship, an alien and a thousand lost toys and a happy ending are included.
I will have to try this in my toy or summer story time.

Oh, the imagination and wild illustrations! Mini Grey is in a league of her own.
Toys in Space highlights what could happen when toys are left outside overnight. It's the first book I read on the subject and it can be a real fear for children. The new theme was my favorite part of the story before it got strange. The toys tell a story and they get beamed into a spaceship and meet an alien - a young alien - looking for a toy. The most disappointing section was the brief talking about probing. Probing. Really? (Clearly, for the older children and adults who are reading this to younger children.) It can be a fun and adventurous read to share with others, but not a favorite for me.

I like the story-within-a-story format. When the toys are left outside, some of them feel afraid. So WonderDoll tells a story to pass the time, one where the toys all go in a space ship and of course come home safely. Very kid-relate-able, and the way Grey used the space on the page to tell her story and the story that's told within it was clever. I'd hoped for a funnier twist with where the alien's lost toy was, so the ending wasn't as satisfying as the rest of the story, but still, this was fun.

I love Mini Grey's picture books! Quirky and filled with good words. One day I swear I will find the right storytime crew to share them with.

The story itself is silly and fun and I definitely recommend it. The illustrations are really busy and there are too many speech bubbles. However, I will just skip reading a lot of the speech bubbles and then this one will make a great group read aloud for my preK story time.

Interesting illustrations and the different character voices bump this up to a 3. The story itself was a smidge lackluster and the message at the end was disappointing.
