The story opens with Arthur's death on the night of the collapse at a play performance. Some of the people we follow are his ex-wives, his son, his best friend, and a little girl who was a co-star at the play.
I wasn't personally attached to the story, but there wasn't anything wrong with it either.

Minor: Pedophilia

I quite enjoyed this book. Emily St John Mandel is fast becoming my favourite author. I like the way she weaves her stories and ties things together with neat but emotional little bows. I quite liked how this was a little different than a standard post-apocalyptic book in that it was based more on relationships and less on the nitty-gritty of survival. I also liked how there was a lot of speculation about how people would reminisce and find different memories of technology to fixate on.

This book made me feel a very specific way. It really worried me at first. There was anxiety sitting in my chest. Its virus’s total destruction scared me and reminded me of how I felt in 2020. I think that’s why I rushed to finish the second half. I wanted it to be over. But there were sparks of joy and moments of the beauty of humanity, of the hope of re-starting and of invention that lifted the tone for me. I think Miranda was my favorite character, but just like Sea of Tranquility, I do think this author trades character development for “aha!” moments at the reveals of the connections.
I cannot fathom the difference of reading this book before COVID and now. It’s still almost too much for me. Curious to see how the show will sit with me.
