Slow start, but it's a beautiful story of love and friendship.

I started this book on a flight from Atlanta to New York City, so imagine my delight when Ricki moves from Atlanta to NYC in the first chapter!

And I guess it’s only fitting that I’m finishing this book on the flight back with tears streaming down my face (happy or sad, you’ll have to read to find out!).

I love absolutely everything about this book. The writing and narrative style remind me about of When the World Tips Over; it feels like a friend is talking to you and infusing magic every step of the day. I just want more and more of this story, from enjoying Ricki’s bouquets to hearing Ezra’s music.

Many beautiful, and heartbreaking but important, stories are weaved together to ultimately form this incredible story of love and freedom. I highly recommend for everyone (required reading from me!), but you’ll especially adore it if you love:

💌 diverse love stories
✨ magical realism
🏙️ nyc setting and history

Tia Williams has done it again. Every time I read one of her books she reaches into my chest and pulls my heart out. This was such a beautiful and artistic book, and truly romantic.

The book does deal with some very heavy subject matter, largely because it touches on the experience of African Americans during the early 20th century, i.e. the Jim Crow era south. Death is also a big theme throughout but it still manages to be funny in places and have an overall uplifting vibe. Tia Williams has a very strong, witty voice so her characters are a delight to experience, trauma and all.

Tia Williams you deserve all the Literary Awards for this piece 💐💐💐💐

This story tugged at all emotions and wove together the fabric of being human, being Black, being Black while not fully viewed as human in America means 😮‍💨

This story is art truly. The details, imagery, soulful proses and feelings of magic each line breathes to life 😭 I hold firm to no spoilers so will say trust me you indeed need to read this one for yourself.

Also if you are second guessing audio books I encourage to try audiobook version of this story. The narrators Mela Lee and Preston Butler truly usher you into the story and with every character introduction, plot twist and emotion they hold your hand groundingy you in what is sure to be a story that will be shared for generations to come!

I absolutely loved this! The love between Ricki and Ezra was truly magical. The way they tried to fight fate but kept coming around to each other. The epilogue and the last couple of chapters had me crying!
