Best seller sorprenent!

I picked this book because I really enjoyed the Netflix movie, but this was weirdly not as good. Liked the characters in the movie a lot more.

My daughter pushed this one on me, and it's a really quick read for an adult. As a general rule I'm not a fan of this sort of "let's tell a story about out of copyright X character's sibling/parent/child/bartender", but I have to admit this one had a certain charm. There are too cute by half bits, but at the same time Enola is a predictably unreliable narrator - at the start she is not honest to herself about how skilled she is at some things - and her emotions of youth play nicely against her older siblings, making for a good character dynamic. The puzzles are well calibrated to the target audience. Finally the book does a great job of both showing and telling the oppression of women in the Victorian timeframe and the struggles against it.

This was just okay. I liked Enola’s character, but found it very slow to start, it would start to pick up and then kind of fizzle out. Even though it was an open ending to continue the series, I just found it “meh.”

In this, the first book of a most imaginative series, we find Enola Holmes, the young sister of Sherlock Holmes, running away to London in search of her mother who has mysteriously disappeared. However, when she arrives, she finds herself facing much more than she bargained for. Enola, though, proves herself every bit as talented a detective as her well-known brother. Well written and exciting, these books also present an excellent picture of London life in Victorian times. - Jess O.
