Overview

Wide reading of literature for young people is an important component of literacy teaching.  Teachers must be avid readers.  An extensive set of critical annotated bibliographies will be a useful tool that contributes to your professional knowledge. Thus, the purpose of this project is to broaden and deepen your knowledge of literature for young people, to respond personally to the books you read, and to create a record of your reading for future use. You will want to select high-quality examples of literature.
Gene Yang, the former National Ambassador of Young People’s Literature, had a platform which is entitled “Reading Without Walls.”  He explained, “[I want] every kid — every reader, really — to explore the world through books.  Books have played a vital role in getting outside of my comfort zone.

1. Read 3 books about a character who doesn’t look like you or live like you.
2. Read 3 books about a topic you don’t know much about. (Must be nonfiction books.)
3. Read 3 books in a format that you don’t normally read for fun. This might be a chapter book, a graphic novel, a book in verse, a picture book, or an audiobook.
4.  Read 3 books in a genre that you don’t normally read.
5.  Read 3 books of your choice
