Overview

If you've ever visited the non-fiction section of your local library, most likely it will be categorised using the Dewey Decimal System. This system comprises 10 broad classes:

Class 000 – Computer science, information and general works
Class 100 – Philosophy and psychology
Class 200 – Religion
Class 300 – Social sciences
Class 400 – Language
Class 500 – Science
Class 600 – Technology
Class 700 – Arts and recreation
Class 800 – Literature
Class 900 – History and geography

Each broad class is further subdivided to become increasingly specific. For example, class 500 is Science, 530 is Physics and 537 is Electricity and Electronics. The numbers after the decimal point add even more specificity.

To complete this challenge, you will choose and read a book from each of the broad Dewey classes. If you need help deciding which class a book belongs to, try using Library Thing - https://www.librarything.com/ - which uses the very similar Melville Decimal System. There is also a detailed Wikipedia list of Classes - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dewey_Decimal_classes - that you can refer to. Or just use this as a challenge to peruse the offerings of your local library, which will most likely already be organised by the Dewey Decimal System!

I hope to make a series of videos to go along with this challenge where I deep dive on each of the Dewey Classes, and you'll find those on the Curatorially Yours YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/@curatoriallyyours1440
