Hellboy, Vol. 3: The Chained Coffin and Others by Mike Mignola
5.0
An excellent volume of short, unrelated episodes filling in some of HB's backstory.
The Corpse: based off Irish folktale "Teig O'Kane and the Corpse", replacing Teig with HB. It's a great story in the vein of classical storytelling, but as a result is pretty simple and doesn't have much substance. I do kind of want to turn it into a dnd session, though.
Iron Shoes: Weakest in the volume but kind of cute.
Baba Yaga: Good backstory to accompany volume two, but again, too short to be substantial.
Christmas Underground: Great atmosphere on this one, and some of Mignola's best use of lighting and paneling. Nice story overall.
The Chained Coffin: The title series is very obviously one of the best. This is a fantastic, mythical addition to the HB story and canon, full of all of the lovecraftian and religious imagery the series is known for. One of my favorite moments in the series so far, it's a great glimpse at the scope of storytelling yet to come.
The Wolves of St. August: Another excellent story, leaning more on the paranormal investigation side of the universe. Again, excellent use of paneling, light/shadow, and outstanding art overall.
Almost Colossus: Would be fairly worthless as a Liz story but Roger is an interesting enough character to make up for it - plus the Frankenstein-esque gothic story is wonderful.
Overall, the best volume thus far, but mainly due to the title story and The Wolves of St. August.
