Finishing this two days after Elon Musk gave a Roman Salute at Trump's inauguration certainly didn't do much to assuage my anxieties about the next four years, but I have to say this was a really engaging read! It goes hand-in-hand with Alex Garland's Civil War in that neither are so much about the political parties in the increasing divide in America, but more about individual people. I love the way the story swaps between the present civil war (or its eerie aftermath - the book feels more like a tour through an apocalyptic wasteland than an action-y revolution story) and vignettes about life leading up to their hunting trip. I feel like the statement beyond "we're all human at the end of the day" starts to get a little unclear when Collie shows up, but as a thriller the story stayed in my hands until the ending. Contemplative and depressing. My kind of civil war story.
