The main characters felt so lifeless. Like they were just puppets for the plot? And the romance felt unconvincing. Cyan and Einn's were better, but not by much, but Sean and Mendel's were just so goddamn boring. Just because they're magic soulmates or whatever doesn't mean you can skip over the development of their feelings for each other.
