sosososo good!!!! I absolutely adored this!
Messy Roots was very, very good. Gao reflects on her identity and experiences leading up to the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic, weaving different emotions and reflecting on her own growth as a person. Emotionally impactful, the memoir truly digs into identity in multiple ways.
The art is phenomenal; it is all so very intentional, changing to reflect scenes, locations, and periods of the author’s life. It is truly beautiful, and the ending bursting with color was such a wonderful way to end the story at that point in the author's life.
It’s been 24 hrs since I finished reading the book, and I’ve really thought about it nonstop. This is definitely one to read and revisit. Keeping this review brief because most of what I have to say is “wow, this was amazing!” If you can, please do read it.
