I'm pretty sure this was the last book I read in the series when I was wee as I felt it was too dark but this time around I would say this is the best book in the series (so far at least!). This book is a lot darker than any previous instalment in the series but, unlike the previous couple books, this time in a much more enjoyable way.
A lot of elements established prior in the series come together with a focus on parents - the roles of Stoick and Valhallarama as well as Fishlegs' parents are important and made me a bit emotional. Stoick actually talks about his feelings (admittedly he doesn't realise Hiccup is there but this is still development!). Excelinor and Valhallarama have a debate about why their son should be king that was just amazing. There is even some time spent on Snotlout and his father Baggybum, although that is a very distinct contrast to all the other parent child relationships.
Additionally I would do anything for Eggingarde! AAH! I know she is only in the book for a little bit but she is the best: she roars at things when she's scared and tries to make hiccup feel better when they are both having a rubbish time and she just needs a good hug?
This book definitely renewed my interest in continuing (and finishing?) the series!
