Unfortunately this is not a work that does well in translation. To understand many of the jokes and criticisms of Arabic poets, you need a thorough understanding of Arabic grammar and vocabulary. This would also be an easier read if you are familiar with the poets mentioned, although this book does contain an excellent glossary of names and extensive footnotes.
