Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi (Novel) Vol. 5 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu

5.0

An awesome conclusion to an awesome series. The JGY reveal was so good. I talked about Jin Ling earlier but truly I love his character arc and the lesson him and the audience learn through his experiences. No person, despite their attitude or past deeds, is truly fully good or fully bad. Someone could be the biggest threat to the cultivation world and later be revealed to be good-intentioned. Someone could also be the upbeat smiling face at every clan meeting and be revealed to be a scheming, lying, murderer. Does how they turn out to be completely erase who they were previously? Jin Ling knows he would find it easier to put the blame of the loss of his family and his tough life on someone else, but all the candidates for blame have good sides to them too. He realizes that completely putting all blame on these people would never be fair, because as full people with good sides and bad sides, no one is fully deserving of that.
Jin Guangyao's death and postmortem punishment is fair justice, but Jin Ling seems to be the only one who doesn't immediately blame JGY for every wrongdoing, similar to what happened to wwx. People's fickle nature and their eagerness to place blame on someone outside of themselves are definitely themes of the whole series.

There has been 1 moment that made me cry in every single mdzs book and in this one it was the narrator giving us insight into Jiang Cheng's thoughts in the temple. How he wanted to tell Wei Wuxian about how he tried to lure the Wens hunting them away from him and got captured, losing his golden core. But he didn't tell WWX for the same reason that WWX had never told Jiang Cheng that he gave him his own core. WWX may learn eventually, but he was happier not knowing. I loved these few paragraphs. It gave so much meaning to WHY everything happened due to jc's core plot and it was such a relief knowing that the reason that pretty much the entire story was catapulted for a good reason rather than JC selfishly freaking out. Definitely a testament to his selfless character and the bond between JC and WWX. I could talk about JC for hours if I'm being real. I totally understand now why he's a favorite. He's one of my faves now too.

UHH the extras were cute HAHA. Let's not talk about the incense burner extra. All the other ones were super good little short stories and I loved seeing all of the characters getting a good ending that they deserve. In my vol. 4 review I mentioned that the Siege of the Burial Mounds was the climax of a very powerful classic tragedy plot. But MXTX keeps things feeling hopeful since WWX gets a second chance at life and being able to learn from his mistakes, which the main characters of tragedies do not ever get to do. SO glad that Wen Yuan (Lan Sizhui) is safe and living a good life!!!! Raised by WWX and then LWJ is crazy!!! Wen Ning living his own life as more than a general and doing good on Night Hunts is everything I need in life. The extra with WWX and LWJ picking lotus seeds together on that old boat made me go waa!
