Dandy by Ame Dyckman, Charles Santoso
5.0
This book caught my eye as I was processing new books at work. For one thing - I love dandelions. Sacrilege, I know. I've gotten asked about my favorite flower and I could never give a good enough answer, because while I like lots of flowers there was never a flower that was MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE.
Then I saw a meme online with one image of a rose dramatically dying because the pH in the soil wasn't absolutely perfect, and another image of a dandelion growing out of the sidewalk captioned as "F*** YEAH CONCRETE!" And I realized - dandelions were my favorite! They can live pretty much anywhere, they're the only flowers as a kid that it's okay to pick and give to your mom (and Mom always put them in a cup of water to put on the windowsill), and they're even edible - which will be useful in the impending zombie apocalypse. It also helps that I grew up on a farm and not a snobby HOA-infested subdivision, so we weren't so freaked-out about how the yard looked.
So a picture book about a little girl who makes friends with the weed that her yard-conscious father is meant to utterly destroy - and that the daughter names the dandelion "Charlotte" - oh my heart, this is the best thing in the world! It's not clear if little Sweetie knew that her father was waiting to destroy Charlotte when Sweetie wasn't looking, or if she just wanted to hang out with her friend all the time and that kept Daddy from eradicating his nemesis. But either way, it's a fun book. And all the other dads in the neighborhood FINALLY removed the sticks out of their backsides about the weeds.
Plus, the author's note at the end made me laugh. :D
This will absolutely go into my Storytime rotation. More than that, I need to own this book for myself.
