Just Like You by Nick Hornby
4.0
Nick Hornby books always make me laugh aloud and think hard-- my favorite type of writer. In this novel, a white woman in her early forties and a Black man in his early 20s start a romance just before the Brexit vote. Neither knows what they want (except they don't want to go public) and they sometimes see each other because he babysits her two young sons, who love him.
In a deft way, Hornby deals with issues of gender, race, and class. The diff in education and experience separates this couple. How can they socialize with others when her friends are teachers and professionals and he's a part-time butchershop employee who goes to clubs with his 20-something friends?
Underlying this is the tension about who votes in or out on Brexit and why. In the end, this is a book about Brexit in the most human terms, but I'll leave that for readers to work out. Highly recommend!
