How this is a debut novel, I'll never know - it is flawless.
We follow Mila, a demon condemned to death, saved at the last second by an unhinged princess whose whims lie on a knife's edge, only to then be sold into a form of slavery to capture her own kind for a profit. Her new master - the enigmatic and morally grey Christopher Culis.
With false gods, demon sacrifices and lies and deceit at every turn, people live in fear, unbalanced and decaying from the Church's rule.
Elyse has a magical way with words, so as she weaves politics and religion into the main themes, it's incredibly engaging and absorbing. Her world building is second to none. As the pages turn and you fall further into the story, you are introduced to many players, all as important as each other. Though it's Mila's unfolding and sometimes begrudging relationship with Christopher that really intrigues the reader, pulling them into the world completely.
Did I mention this is a book not to be missed??
I don't want to give too much away, because you deserve to discover this on your own - but if you enjoy:
- slow burn
- strong and sassy MFC
- forbidden romance
- enemies to (almost) lovers
- politics and religion
- betrayals
- a princess we love to hate
- demon slavery
- morally grey MMC
Then you can't miss this - I mean it, you should not pass this one over...
