Alex & Eliza by Melissa de la Cruz
2.0
If you're a #Ham4Ham: stop. Put the book down. Don't do it. Don't.
Even if you can move beyond your fandom (I tried), it's sloppy craft. I have high expectations, even for YA, and especially for YA. This didn't meet any of them. The dialogue and speech are forced and almost intolerable. The situations are awkward and unbelievable. The balance of historical and situational detail is forced and off kilter. In short? Someone wrote this really fast and the publisher wanted to get it to market as fast as can for moolah.
P.s. The final encounter with Eliza and Alexander? That spoken chat? Dude. All that Alex says is copy and pasted from an actual letter that Hamilton wrote to her. IT IS NOT MEANT TO BE READ ALOUD. IT FEELS SO AWKWARD! (See? It is possible to be too much of a fan girl. History has its eyes on you, De La Cruz.)
