Andrew Joseph White is an author I always know I can put my full faith into and Compound Fracture is no exception. It is as brutal as it is heart-shattering and the entire story is a tense race of survival. Miles is a fantastically flawed narrator, someone who sits in the middle of the storm that is the backstory of his family and seeing how he grows as a person is just incredible to watch play out. Compound Fracture isn’t something that I’d consider remotely close to a light read. In fact, I felt physically sick reading parts of this book but I am very grateful for the privilege.
Cooper’s death is by far one of the most haunting moments I have ever read like I was shaking to the point I had to stop reading and then the moment I started again, the shaking came back.
This book is all about those who are pushed down and belittled by society, whether that’s for being autistic, trans or any aspect of who you are and Compound Fracture speaks to all aspects of being shunned and shut down and there is so much gore and power here that this is a must read, if you can stomach it.
