A Dangerous Education by Megan Chance is a tense, slow-burn of a historical thriller that draws the reader in with every page.

Rosemary Chivers is an unmarried, 34 year-old teacher in the 1950s during the middle of McCarthyism and House of Un-American Committee (HUAC) hearings. She’s haunted by her past and is desperate to escape her controlling mother until one day her gut tells her she needs to make a visit home. Her mother convinces her to take a job at a local school for troubled girls.

Rosemary ends up taking three of the teen girls under her wing despite the warnings of other teachers. She feels an intense connection with them and can’t help not staying away. Her reason: one of them is the daughter she gave up for adoption 17 years earlier.

Despite its slow pace, I could not put this book down. The tension and suspense draws you in. It was like watching a train wreck. You can’t look away. Rosemary was incredibly frustrating at times and made so many poor choices but because of Chance’s writing and the way she develops the characters and setting, it all came together beautifully.

For fans of dark academia and historical thrillers, A Dangerous Education is a must read.
