Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson
5.0
Much better than I was expecting. Character depth and development was a lot better than I've come to expect from Sanderson. He tends to focus more on worldbuilding than characters, but this book sufficiently impressed me with a balance of both. Characters have distinct enough voices that they feel like they could be real people, and you can tell that Sanderson did quite a bit of research to make their common knowledge feel common (like how high-quality satin lays). I particularly liked Yumi's growth in making her own choices and growing beyond the abusive situations of her childhood. The themes about art and artist in the wake of AI thought out and poignant, and fit well within the book and without it. I also really liked the art. Every time I wanted to give up reading, I would look at the beautiful art and get enough energy to keep going. You can tell it was done by someone who loves women, and sees them as more than just objects of desire.
