The Art of Fantasy: A Visual Sourcebook of All that is Unreal by S. Elizabeth

informative inspiring reflective slow-paced

3.75

I loved the thesis of this collection, the chosen categories to explore fantasy art, and so much of the art itself.
However, I found myself really struggling with the tone of the introductions and editorial comments from the author throughout. I don’t know if it was because the comments felt inconsistently informal and leaned towards grandiose generalizations or if my hesitation derived from the notable a sense of context about the person in conversation with the reader.
The book has no author statement, photo, or other positionally statement. It felt disembodied and suspicious.
I also wanted more focused and similar information about each piece included- some would include artist history, some close readings of the piece, some nonsensical observations.
This being said, this book is beautiful and introduced me to some of the,y new favorite artists and pieces.
