At first I was worried that this would be a rehashing of this jokes: a mechanism to promote his stand up.
But it wasn’t. While he’s half Filipino and I am full, there are a lot of overlaps in our stories. It was comforting to hear that the nuances are universal.
Our stories are all similar and I found myself, not saying “yeah me too!” But nodding along. I wasn’t surprised by what he said because parts are a reflection of my own life. It was more like “I know … right?”
I love memoirs because I learn things about industries or cultures I never knew. But this is so representative of our culture (down to the migration patterns) I found myself thinking”I want my kids to hear this. So they know it’s not just me.”
If you read this and are outside of the culture. I hope you learn something.
If you are part of it, pssssttttt hoy! Kain na!
