Gathering Dark by Candice Fox
2.0
2.75/5
I unfortunately didn't love this. I feel like I could have rounded my rating up to 3/5 if I had not previously read her Crimson Lake series, which was really great (the audiobook narrator was fantastic in that series).
The plot of this book was a bit too boring and predictable for me. The characters were the only reason I pushed through; however, having read her other books before this, everything felt way too formulaic (from the issue of child custody to the corrupt policemen, cute unconventional pet, quirky characters, vandalism of property, and friendly forensic pathologist). Sneak and Diggy, although quirky and loveable in their own way, seemed like inferior versions of Amanda from the Crimson Lake series, and even the climax of this book reminded me heavily of the ending of 'Gone by Midnight', book three of CL.
I feel as though I should be giving these characters a little bit more credit regardless of whether or not I had read the CL series beforehand; however, the plot is what ultimately brought down the rating for me. I wish I could have loved it more.
