Before We Were Trans: A New History of Gender by Kit Heyam

informative reflective medium-paced

3.0

Very thoughtful exploration of stories from the past that contain a variety of gender associated experiences. The stories are looked at from several lenses, from modern day people and scholars, to past sources and historical contexts. This book is academic but not overly dense, except for some sections and scholarly critiques, which I did feel were important but got a bit repetitive and long. The intro was very well executed and speaks on how complex gender, sex, and trans identity can be. The summary outlines what is contained in this book very well, so I'd recommend this to anyone intrigued by the summary, or someone interested in gender non-conforming stories that ask and somewhat answer serious academic questions.
