Hellboy, Vol. 4: The Right Hand of Doom by Mike Mignola
3.0
Another volume of short stories, but the ones here feel mostly more inconsequential or episodic than volume 3. Aside from just a few stories, feels very much like filler - which is an odd choice this early into the run.
Pancakes: two pages and hilarious. Worth checking out just for that.
Nature of the Beast: Loved the ending of this one but otherwise doesn't feel particularly noteworthy. One of the first times I've ever been disappointed in Mignola's art as well, since he doesn't focus enough on the monster at hand.
King Vold: A nice little fairy tale but the short length undermines its impact. I do love the art and action in this one.
Heads: Mignola's said this is one of his favorite Hellboy stories but I'm not seeing it. I really like placing HB into a different culture than normal, but otherwise pretty -eh-.
Goodbye Mister Tod: If this had been a page or two longer I would loved it - the ending is excellent and it hints at a greater larger world to the realm of the comics - but is just too short to live up to its potential.
The Varcolac - I love the concept of the varcolac, but it exists here for a scant handful of panels which is a disappointment.
The Right Hand of Doom - Since I came into HB backwards, I already knew the importance of the stone hand, but it's funny to hear Mignola talk about how everyone ignored it at first. This story isn't the best but it does feel important - it also gives us a nice recap of events and has some decent emotional weight to it as well.
Box Full of Evil - Should be canonized merely for these three panels. Expands on the previous story and adds more depth to HB.
