The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djèlí Clark

5.0

This was unexpectedly delightful! I came in expecting a fairly serious fantasy novel about assassins and whatnot, but what P. Djèlí Clark brought to the table was so much more. THE DEAD CAT TAIL ASSASSINS was a darkly comedic fantasy romp with time shenanigans and characters that have so much heart. Snappy worldbuilding, layered side characters, and an incredible narration in the audiobook by Lynette R. Freeman (omg the voices!!) made this such an enjoyable read for me.

The humor here is what LONG LIVE EVIL aspired to be -- comedic, sometimes silly even despite the darkness and questionable morality of the characters. Even though the content is serious (death, murder, assassinations, etc.), the story doesn't take itself too seriously and lets the characters' personalities shine through amidst it all. The protagonist Eveen is layered and a bit brutal sometimes, but she also has her moments as she works to get out of a suspicious assassination contract. P. Djèlí Clark does a great job of building up to the twists at the end, leaving snippets here and there that make you question whether things go as the characters think they are, and then unveiling in the end to something satisfying to read.

I would love more to this series about other mysteries and shenanigans that Eveen gets up to, and would definitely recommend to any fans of dark comedy fantasy novels!
