This is such a creative way to write an essay, and I love Poe's creativity with it. Slowly moving from an essay to a short story is something I don't think I've ever seen before. The idea of an inner voice that compels us both to commit destructive actions and to self-destruct. It's also really interestingly predictive of the psychology that Freud and Jung would elaborate on with repression.
