The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester
5.0
Esper detectives have ensured that premeditated murder has not been completed successfully in more than seventy years, but Ben Reich is ready to change that. He's developed a plan to murder a business rival, and believes he has all the pieces in place to get away with it. He'd better be right, or else he faces the highest punishment his future can offer--Demolition.
What a fuckin' cool book! A far future where hopping between Venus and the Earth might as well be driving to the next town over; espers overseeing all aspects of life and obeying their own code of conduct. The noir hook draws you in, and then you're faced with a scenario that isn't what you thought you were getting into, and it's ready to go places much stranger than the future. For all of its high concept, what's most remarkable is that the book never feels as though it's taking itself too seriously or bogged down too deeply in what could have been a grim concept.
Just a darn fun read from start to finish.
