Big Shoes to Fill by Upile uThixo Bongco
5.0
Thank you to Pan MacMillan South Africa for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
"Every morning, Ta'mkhulu shines Zinzo's shoes before he leaves for school. He uses a soft cream cloth. 'Khulu says it collects the memories that settle on Zinzo's shoes."
This is the kind of book that makes me wish I wanted to have children; Big Shoes To Fill is definitely one that would be on their shelves!
Zinzo lives with his grandfather, who is always kind and polite and always reminds him that Zinzo has big shoes to fill. One day he has to present an oral at school and since he loves his family so much, that is what he decided to talk about.
When Zinzo gets to the part about his two fathers who live in the city, he faces ridicule when his classmates laugh at him. 'Khulu explains to Zinzo why his dads live elsewhere and that the other children don't understand through a sort of show and tell of his own. With this deeper understanding, Zinzo developed a new confidence and determination.
Big Shoes To Fill is so much more than just a picture book; Every day our world is becoming less hetero-normative and books like this absolutely needs to be on every child's shelf!
