Ocmulgee National Monument: A Brief History with Field Notes by Gordon Johnston, Matthew Jennings

5.0

An approachable and engaging history of the Ocmulgee Mounts site, this brief guide provides coverage from the earliest paleoindian settlers to the park today. Written with sensitivity to the colonialist dialogues that dominate earlier histories, and with a clear goal of valuing indigenous voices, the author's capture the complexity of the site well. As a reader, I wish there was more depth all around, but I also realize that the scope of the guide is to be an overview and orientation rather than an exhaustive history. The further reading at the end appears to fill the need for more information. The interwoven field notes, while not historical retellings, do a remarkable job capturing much of the spirit of the site, and help frame each historical period. I strongly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about Ocmulgee history, and the history of Middle Georgia.
