Aunt Dimity Beats the Devil by Nancy Atherton

5.0

Aunt Dimity books are like comfort food. You always feel a bit better after you've read them and they restore little bits of your faith in humanity somehow. This one got a bit dark though. I don't read a lot of horror, so it might just be me, but reading this before bed definitely caused some interesting dreams for a few nights. Atherton does suspense and just the right amount of creepy very well. Lori is called upon by her old boss to go catalogue a library in a Gothic castle in Northumberland. She suspects he may have had ulterior motives, however, when she meets the owners of the castle-Nicole and Jared Hollander. Nicole is terrified of her new home and keeps hearing things when she is alone. Lori suspects foul play but starts to fall under a spell of her own with a local-Adam-who helped save her life when her car crashed during a storm. As Lori leans more and more on Adam, Dimity must save the day with her characteristic good advice and warnings. A historic love story emerges and Lori is determined to discover Wyrdhurst's secrets before someone gets hurt! I really liked this one (just not before bed!). :) Can't wait for the next Dimity story.
