So the history of American women in combat seems to be: there have always been American women serving in combat roles, but because these roles were largely unofficial, they were never able to access any benefits, formal or informal, that came along with being combat veterans. Hopefully that is changing, but it does make me wonder how many stories like these nurses' experiences have already been lost to history.
