The nice thing about this illustrated middle grade story is that it's not mean spirited. The kids seem to like each other. They laugh at each other's antics.

It's still about boys and the girl is a romantic interest. The boys are the funny ones. The girl is serious and exists to be impressed.

There aren't many heavily illustrated middle grade books in which boys and girls are genuine friends. Or, I haven't found them yet.
